Gorilla conservation-themed installations celebrating Rwanda's ecosystem

Location Rwanda
Client Wilderness Safaris
Sector Game Lodge
Year 2022

Gorilla conservation-themed installations celebrating Rwanda's unique ecosystem and wildlife. Custom artwork that immerses guests in the story of mountain gorilla preservation, creating a profound connection between luxury hospitality and conservation purpose.

The Brief

Bisate Lodge sits in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes, one of the last refuges of the mountain gorilla. Wilderness Safaris wanted installations that would honour this extraordinary setting and deepen guests' understanding of the conservation efforts that make gorilla trekking possible.

The challenge was to create artwork that felt reverent and educational without being heavy-handed - pieces that would complement the lodge's striking architecture and the dramatic volcanic landscape beyond.

Our Approach

We drew inspiration from Rwanda's volcanic landscape, its lush montane forests, and the gentle giants that inhabit them. Each installation was designed to tell a chapter of the gorilla conservation story - from the threat of habitat loss to the hope of growing family groups.

The artwork integrates natural materials and textures that echo the surrounding environment, creating a seamless transition between the lodge interior and the extraordinary world outside.

The Craft

The Bisate installations encompass a range of mediums and techniques:

  • Hand-illustrated gorilla family portraits capturing individual personalities
  • Botanical studies of the Virunga montane forest flora
  • Textural wall pieces incorporating volcanic stone and natural fibres
  • Conservation timeline artwork documenting Rwanda's gorilla protection journey
  • Custom sculptural elements inspired by volcanic geological forms

Each piece was created to withstand Rwanda's highland climate while maintaining the warmth and intimacy that defines the Bisate guest experience.
