Original rondavel installations celebrating the Sabi Sand heritage

Location Sabi Sand, South Africa

Sector Game Lodge

Original rondavel installations celebrating the heritage and natural beauty of the Sabi Sand reserve. Custom pieces that honour the lodge's deep history and connection to the land, creating a museum-like experience within the iconic Londolozi rondavels.

The Brief

Londolozi is one of Africa's most storied safari destinations, with a history stretching back generations. The Varty family wanted to transform their original rondavels into a living museum - a space where the lodge's heritage, the surrounding landscape, and the wildlife that defines it could be experienced in an intimate, curated setting.

The installations needed to feel authentic to Londolozi's character - neither overly polished nor roughly rustic, but something that honoured the real, lived history of the place.

Our Approach

We immersed ourselves in the Londolozi story - studying archival photographs, walking the land, and listening to the stories of those who have shaped the lodge over decades. Each installation was designed to capture a specific thread of this narrative.

The rondavel spaces are circular and intimate, demanding artwork that works with the architecture rather than against it. We designed pieces that follow the curves of the walls and draw the eye around the space, creating a journey of discovery within each room.

The Craft

The Londolozi installations brought together heritage storytelling and fine craft:

  • Archival photography curated and restored from the Londolozi family collection
  • Hand-illustrated maps of the Sabi Sand concession and its changing landscapes
  • Natural history specimens celebrating the reserve's Big Five and beyond
  • Heritage artefacts displayed with museum-quality mounting and lighting
  • Custom circular display frameworks designed for the rondavel architecture

Every element was chosen and placed with care, ensuring the installations feel like a natural extension of the lodge's character rather than an imposed layer of decoration.
